THE MERCY OF GOD :SUNDAY OUTLINE   (BRO. EMMA OKORIE) 24TH SEPTEMBER, 2023

TOPIC: THE MERCY OF GOD

Our lives depend on the mercy of God.

We are living by the mercy of God; The unlimited favour of  God.

Mercy and grace are two God’s character of virtue that look alike.

Mercy fuels compassion.

Mercy chooses not to be offended, and compassionately sees a hurting heart.

Mercy is an extension of  ‘expression of love, “It is an act of kindness, compassion, or favor.”

Mercy is the kindness and compassion shown to one who offends, while grace is the abiding presence of God in our souls which lifts us up.

Grace extends to heaven, whereas mercy ends in a moment of death.

Mercy is an epitome of God’s character.

God’s mercy is reflected on the cross, a direct reflection of Christ love for mankind.  – Luke 23:34(NLT)34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.

No matter how upright and righteous we are, without God’s mercy we are doomed

The Psalmist prayed Ps 51:1(KJV) Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

God’s mercy is everlasting.

Ps 100:5(KJV)5 For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Ps 103:17(KJV)17 But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children.

While someone was enumerating his self righteousness the other one was busy asking for God’s mercy.

Luke 18:10-14(NLT)10 “Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not a sinner like everyone else. For I don’t cheat, I don’t sin, and I don’t commit adultery. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! 12 I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’ 13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ 14 I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Self righteousness makes you proud and pompous; unable to humble yourself; always boasting on your personal ego and achievement.

Mercy is extended to us in this life to bring us into His grace.

Our God gives grace to the humble James 4:6 (KJV) But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

Mercy is essential aspect of God’s character.

God has  chosen to be merciful to His people. Mercy is an expression of who He is, and His love for us – Ex 34:5-6(NLT)5 Then the Lord came down in a cloud and stood there with him; and he called out his own name, Yahweh. 6 The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness.

God’s mercy is seen throughout the scripture.

Deut 4:30-31(NLT)30 “In the distant future, when you are suffering all these things, you will finally return to the Lord your God and listen to what he tells you. 31 For the Lord your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon you or destroy you or forget the solemn covenant he made with your ancestors.

There is nothing that comes from God that is weak.  Mercy is powerful – Ps 25:6-7(NIV)6 Remember, O Lord, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old.  7 Remember not the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember me, for you are good, O Lord.

Ps 86:5-7(NIV)5 You are forgiving and good, O Lord, abounding in love to all who call to you. 6 Hear my prayer, O Lord; listen to my cry for mercy.  7 In the day of my trouble I will call to you, for you will answer me.

Ps 103:2-5(KJV)2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Ps 145:8-9(NLT)8 The Lord is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. 9 The Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all his creation.

We need the mercy refuel daily – Lam 3:22-24(NLT)2 The faithful love of the Lord never ends!  His mercies never cease. 23 Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. 24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!”

Mic 7:18-19(KJV)18 Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.19 He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.

Luke 1:49-55(KJV)49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. 50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. 52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.54 He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

Rom 9:14-16(KJV)14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.

Human being can have mercy on a fellow human being, but no human being can have grace upon his fellow human being.  It is buy Grace you are saved – Eph 2:4-9(KJV)4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Titus 3:4-7(NLT)4 But—”When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, 5 he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. 6 He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. 7 Because of his grace he declared us righteous and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life.

Heb 8:12(KJV)12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

1 Peter 1:3-5(NLT)3 All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, 4 and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.

Matt 5:7 (NLT)7 God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

James 2:13(NLT) There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you.

Col 3:13-15(NLT) 13 Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. 14 Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. 15 And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.

Examples of God’s mercy

John 3:16-17(NLT)16 “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.

1 Tim 1:15-17(NLT)15 This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”—and I am the worst of them all. 16 But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life.

Peter 2:9-10(NLT)9 But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.10 “Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.

Mercy and compassion will compel you to give a helping hand – Luke 10:30-35 “A Jewish man was traveling on a trip from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he was attacked by bandits. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him up, and left him half dead beside the road. 31 “By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by. 32 A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side. 33 “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. 34 Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. 35 The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I’ll pay you the next time I’m here.’”

Mercy helps you to bear one another’s burden.
